How do I book a session?

You can book a session by telephoning me on 07958 714615 or making contact with me through this website to have an initial chat and then arrange a mutually convenient time.  You can also book and pay for a session through my website. Back

What happens at the first meeting?

This is an assessment meeting and is an opportunity for you to talk over your concerns with me and for us both to decide whether I am the right person to work with you. If we decide that I'm not the best person for you then I will refer you on to one of my trusted colleagues or alternatively one of the clinical psychologists within my team. Back

How long do the sessions last and how frequent are they?

The assessment meeting and any subsequent meetings we arrange last for fifty minutes in line with BACP recommendations. Meetings are held on a weekly basis and you will be given a regular appointment time. This time is set aside for you until we finish our work together. Back

How many sessions do I need?

This very much depends on the type of difficulties you are experiencing and also their duration. It also depends on how much time you can commit to the counselling process. I often suggest six sessions initially with the option of continuing for longer if we both feel this would be beneficial. Back

Will you give me advice about how to solve my problems?

Counselling is not advice giving. Together we will look at your problems and difficulties to make sense of them. Once we both have more of an understanding we can look at ways to move forward.  Back

Will counselling work for me?

If you know what you want to achieve from counselling you are half way there. Counselling can also assist you to determine your goals if you are unsure of which way to turn. However, if you are attending counselling because of a bereavement or loss then we can work towards an understanding of the grief process itself. If you commit to the counselling and attend booked sessions then counselling will work for you. It works particularly well for people that are willing to look at themselves, consider the possibility that they are partly responsible for some of the problems in their life and can be motivated enough to put into practice any insights that emerge from the counselling sessions. Back

Who are your clients and do I have to be referred to you?

My clients come from wide and varied backgrounds. Some are referred via GPs or health workers. Some are referred via private agencies, insurance schemes or EAPs (employee assistance programmes). I am a registered health care provider for a number of private patient plans. Many people refer themselves by calling me for an appointment. You do not have to be referred. You can self-refer in confidence by telephoning me on 07958 714615 or by contacting me. I will get back to you as soon as possible within 24 hours. Back

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (known as CBT)
I have heard about CBT - what is it and are you a CBT counsellor?

CBT is a combination of cognitive therapy, which examines thoughts, attitudes, and beliefs (called cognitive processes) and behavioural therapy, which focuses on behaviour in response to those thoughts. CBT is based on the belief that most unhealthy modes of thinking and behaving have been learned over a long period of time. Using a set of structured techniques, CBT aims to identify thinking that causes problematic feelings and behaviour. The client then learns to challenge and modify this thinking which, in turn, leads to more appropriate and positive responses. For example, when we think in a negative way we can become upset or angry and in turn this affects our moods and behaviours. This is like a spiral that can quickly get out of control, distorting perceptions and realities of events sometimes leading to unhelpful consequences. CBT works with clients to put things into perspective to overcome difficulties and encourages people to challenge their beliefs about themselves and their abilities. CBT works well with most issues but is particularly helpful for people suffering from OCD or people who repeat life patterns in a negative way.

I am a CBT counsellor and can work in this way if appropriate to your needs. Back

What does confidentiality mean?

All information disclosed in a counselling environment is treated as confidential, and will not be disclosed to a third party without your permission. If however, I have a concern of a risk of serious harm to yourself or another party, I may need to disclose this. In this event I would always seek to discuss this situation with you in the first instance wherever possible. This is in line with the professional guidelines of the BACP. Back

Do you have a cancellation policy?

There is a strict 48 hour cancellation policy in place which entails paying full fees for sessions cancelled with less than 48 hours notice of appointment. If you need to cancel your appointment please telephone on 07958 714615 leaving a message or alternatively send a text message. Back

What happens if I miss a session?

If for any reason you have to miss a session then please give me 48 hours notice otherwise full fees will apply. Back

How and when do I make a payment?

Payment to be made at the beginning of each appointment session by cash or cheque please. You may also pay with Paypal through my website. Back

How does counselling come to an end?

This will be discussed during our work together. We will work towards an ending when it feels right for you. Counselling may start as weekly sessions and then become fortnightly as time goes on. Back

Where do you see your clients?

My practice is based in the Joseph Clinic which is professional holistic practice that has been established for over 40 years. Other practitioners in the Clinic include 3 osteopaths, a homeopath, acupuncturist and hypnotherapist. My counselling room is relaxing and peaceful. The clinic is less than five minutes walk from the South Woodford tube station (which is on the Central line). If you are coming by bus you can take the 179, W12, W13 or W14. There is a car park at the rear of the clinic which you are welcome to use. Please Click here for a map to my location. Back

What is the difference between Counselling & Psychotherapy?

In essence counselling tends to be short-term with a specific goal in mind. Psychotherapy explores issues in greater depth. Both provide an opportunity to talk to a professional in complete confidence and both cover a range of issues; looking at your past, your present situation and future possibilities. The process of counselling and psychotherapy can be profoundly life changing. All humans are in a continuous process of growth and change along life’s journey which has its ups and downs. Counselling & Psychotherapy When we can look at what went before with a greater understanding we can begin to make sense of our current thoughts, feelings and behaviours. However emphasis is always on the HERE AND NOW because we can only live our lives in the present moment.

It can be difficult to decide whether counselling is the right choice for you therefore it is very important to find a counsellor you feel comfortable with. An initial assessment will give us an opportunity to explore whether we can work together effectively.

I can offer an initial assessment appointment to establish whether counselling is appropriate for you.

Life Coaching Life coaching

Life coaching works with people towards new lives or new careers. People who know where they are and where they want to go and are willing to face challenges along the way. Life coaching is for people that want to succeed. It is a short term working alliance that focuses on goals. It allows for time off the treadmill to look in detail at what matters most in your life. We learn exactly why your life is not working out the way you want it. We clarify what it is you do want and create new goals. We will look at any obstacles such as hidden beliefs that may be limiting your behaviour. It is solution focused and positive. You are always in control of the coaching process. People generally come to life coaching to make improvements at work, social life, relationships, turning dreams into reality and to find peace within.

People who come to life coaching have a sense that more happiness, success, purpose and balance is possible in their lives. They have a hunger for living a fuller life that feels like the one they were meant to live. Properly supported they accomplish some amazing things through life coaching and they regularly say that working together was one of the best decisions they ever made.

So...

If you are serious about moving forward in your life I'd be happy to chat with you and give you a sense of what is possible, so you can make up your own mind. Call Andrea now on 07958 714615 or contact online.

Integrative Therapy

Integrative therapy draws on many theoretical perspectives, integrating knowledge and skills from different therapies.

I do not believe in a "one-model or theory fits all" approach because we are all different and no two people are going to think, feel and behave the same.

A one-model approach is limiting to all the possibilities open to you. By integrating different approaches I can be flexible and go with the flow and energy that you bring to each counselling appointment.

I have trained and studied extensively in the following theoretical models which inform my approach to my work.

  • Personal Centred Counselling
  • Humanistic Therapy
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
  • Psychodynamic Theory and Counselling
  • Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy
  • Art Therapy
  • Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy
  • Meditation for Stress Reduction
  • Rewind Therapy
  • Inner Child Therapy

Many GPs recommend Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) which is the NHS preferred treatment option. I love working with CBT and will be happy to talk to you about whether CBT will be a good option for you.

If you are particularly interested in a specific approach then please contact me to discuss.

Addiction

Over the past 8 years I have worked successfully with over 250 clients in one to one counselling specifically for substance misuse or other addictions such as gambling, codependency, internet and sex addiction. I have also worked with countless partners and families affected by the behaviours of their addicted sons, daughters, fathers, mothers etc. The effects are far reaching and cross-generational.

Many clients contact me because they are facing serious alcohol and cocaine problems. Because I have a lot of experience in this area I will be able to assess you very quickly and recommend your best treatment option. My recommendation will depend on your personal circumstances such as whether you are:

  • Physically or psychologically dependent or both
  • Your symptoms
  • Your pattern of use i.e. are you waking up with the shakes and drinking first thing in the morning or are you a binge drinker
  • The amount and number of substances you are using
  • How long this has been a problem for you and other relevant factors

BOOK AN ASSESSMENT APPOINTMENT NOW

on 07958 7146156 or contact me

Of all the clients in this group that I have seen over the past 8 years I have recommended less than 10% for detox or entry into rehab. I will work with you on a structured programme which will enable you to get control over your drinking or drug taking, respect back for yourself and provide you with the skills and tools to live a healthy fulfilling life.

If I do recommend rehab because this is your best option then I will direct you to NHS funded programmes or an excellent affordable rehab if the NHS lists are too long. I will give you practical and honest advice on the reality of drug treatment in the UK.

Some clients do not want to go to their GPs because they do not want their addiction or drug or alcohol problems to be on their medical records. If this is the case and you wish for private confidential and professional support then please give me a call now on 07958 714615 or contact me.

Andrea Harrn & Prince Edward

I am closely linked with local (East London and Essex) drugs services and private addiction services and rehabs. I am an affiliate provider of counselling services for EAPs and online substance misuse services such as DryOutNow.com, AddictionAdvisor.co.uk.

In 2007 I was proud and honoured to be introduced to Prince Edward who opened the new wing at Drugsline where I also work as senior counsellor.

I have over 80% success rate with clients. I will work with you to either stop completely, i.e. abstinence from drugs or alcohol or to reduce to a manageable and acceptable level. It is always your choice. Many of my clients are now running NA, CA and MA meetings across London, Essex and Kent. Others have continued to be become successful in their lives, careers and relationships.

ADDICTION affects every aspect of a person’s life.

Don’t wait to tackle it - get professional support – it is not easy to do it alone!!!!

Contact or call me now on 07958 714615

My drug treatment programme can take place at appointment times to suit you and will be cost effective.

I also recommend fellowship meetings in conjunction with counselling but know that some people don’t like the idea of meetings - that is completely your choice. If you do go to the meetings I can still be your counsellor and will work with you on the 12 steps. If you don’t go to meetings this will not hinder your progress. It is your choice!!!

So…… If you are looking for help for alcoholism or treatment for drug addiction and are seriously concerned about yourself or a loved one don’t delay seeking help! If you/they have tried again and again and you have spent a lot of energy and time trying to get your loved one to quit drinking or drugs, then please contact me for help. What are you waiting for? Drugs and alcohol can destroy lives and alcoholism takes lives - it has little to do with what kind of alcohol you drink or how long you have been drinking or how much – it is about the person’s uncontrollable need for alcohol. Which is why most alcoholics cannot use willpower – its like the need for water or food. Imagine not being able to drink water or eat………with support and treatment many alcoholics are able to stop drinking and rebuild their lives.

If appropriate I can refer you to a free family intervention service. Family intervention works with the family of the drug addict/alcoholic and is appropriate for families that are seriously worried that if they don’t do something their loved one is going to either go to jail, end up in an institution or die.
