What issues do you work with? I work with the following issues: |

How do I book a session? You can book a session by telephoning me on 07958 714615 or making contact with me through this website to have an initial chat and then arrange a mutually convenient time. You can also book and pay for a session through my website. Back What happens at the first meeting? This is an assessment meeting and is an opportunity for you to talk over your concerns with me and for us both to decide whether I am the right person to work with you. If we decide that I'm not the best person for you then I will refer you on to one of my trusted colleagues or alternatively one of the clinical psychologists within my team. Back How long do the sessions last and how frequent are they? The assessment meeting and any subsequent meetings we arrange last for fifty minutes in line with BACP recommendations. Meetings are held on a weekly basis and you will be given a regular appointment time. This time is set aside for you until we finish our work together. Back How many sessions do I need? This very much depends on the type of difficulties you are experiencing and also their duration. It also depends on how much time you can commit to the counselling process. I often suggest six sessions initially with the option of continuing for longer if we both feel this would be beneficial. Back Will you give me advice about how to solve my problems? Counselling is not advice giving. Together we will look at your problems and difficulties to make sense of them. Once we both have more of an understanding we can look at ways to move forward. Back Will counselling work for me? If you know what you want to achieve from counselling you are half way there. Counselling can also assist you to determine your goals if you are unsure of which way to turn. However, if you are attending counselling because of a bereavement or loss then we can work towards an understanding of the grief process itself. If you commit to the counselling and attend booked sessions then counselling will work for you. It works particularly well for people that are willing to look at themselves, consider the possibility that they are partly responsible for some of the problems in their life and can be motivated enough to put into practice any insights that emerge from the counselling sessions. Back Who are your clients and do I have to be referred to you? My clients come from wide and varied backgrounds. Some are referred via GPs or health workers. Some are referred via private agencies, insurance schemes or EAPs (employee assistance programmes). I am a registered health care provider for a number of private patient plans. Many people refer themselves by calling me for an appointment. You do not have to be referred. You can self-refer in confidence by telephoning me on 07958 714615 or by contacting me. I will get back to you as soon as possible within 24 hours. Back Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (known as CBT) CBT is a combination of cognitive therapy, which examines thoughts, attitudes, and beliefs (called cognitive processes) and behavioural therapy, which focuses on behaviour in response to those thoughts. CBT is based on the belief that most unhealthy modes of thinking and behaving have been learned over a long period of time. Using a set of structured techniques, CBT aims to identify thinking that causes problematic feelings and behaviour. The client then learns to challenge and modify this thinking which, in turn, leads to more appropriate and positive responses. For example, when we think in a negative way we can become upset or angry and in turn this affects our moods and behaviours. This is like a spiral that can quickly get out of control, distorting perceptions and realities of events sometimes leading to unhelpful consequences. CBT works with clients to put things into perspective to overcome difficulties and encourages people to challenge their beliefs about themselves and their abilities. CBT works well with most issues but is particularly helpful for people suffering from OCD or people who repeat life patterns in a negative way. I am a CBT counsellor and can work in this way if appropriate to your needs. Back What does confidentiality mean? All information disclosed in a counselling environment is treated as confidential, and will not be disclosed to a third party without your permission. If however, I have a concern of a risk of serious harm to yourself or another party, I may need to disclose this. In this event I would always seek to discuss this situation with you in the first instance wherever possible. This is in line with the professional guidelines of the BACP. Back Do you have a cancellation policy? There is a strict 48 hour cancellation policy in place which entails paying full fees for sessions cancelled with less than 48 hours notice of appointment. If you need to cancel your appointment please telephone on 07958 714615 leaving a message or alternatively send a text message. Back What happens if I miss a session? If for any reason you have to miss a session then please give me 48 hours notice otherwise full fees will apply. Back How and when do I make a payment? Payment to be made at the beginning of each appointment session by cash or cheque please. You may also pay with Paypal through my website. Back How does counselling come to an end? This will be discussed during our work together. We will work towards an ending when it feels right for you. Counselling may start as weekly sessions and then become fortnightly as time goes on.
