Counselling and psychotherapy are umbrella terms that cover a range of talking therapies. They are delivered by trained practitioners who work with people over a short or long term to help them bring about effective change and enhance their wellbeing. When looking for a counsellor or psychotherapist be sure to check that they are accredited members of a professional organisation such as the BACP.
Counselling tends to be short-term with a specific goal in mind whereas psychotherapy tends to explore issues in greater depth. Both provide an opportunity to talk to a professional in complete confidence and both cover a range of issues; looking at your past, your present situation and future possibilities. The process of counselling and psychotherapy can be profoundly life changing. All humans are in a continuous process of growth and change along life’s journey which has its ups and downs. When we can look at what went before with a greater understanding we can begin to make sense of our current thoughts, feelings and behaviours. However in my own work emphasis is always on the HERE AND NOW because we can only live our lives in the present moment.
It can be difficult to decide whether counselling/psychotherapy is the right choice for you therefore it is very important to find a counsellor you feel comfortable with. An initial assessment will give us an opportunity to explore whether we can work together effectively.
I can offer an initial assessment appointment to establish whether counselling is appropriate for you.
